John MacMillan of Brockloch

John MacMillan of Brockloch was a Covenanter who survived the period. He died on 28 February 1725 aged 61. He inherited Brockloch in 1664 and was married to Katherine Logan. They had a son, WIlliam.

John MacMillan's father, also John, was a noted Covenanter, who was fined 360 Scottish pounds, at Kirkcudbright, for non-conformity to Prelacy around 1662. His lands were confiscated and given to members of Sir Robert Grierson of Lag's family. This was later annulled and the lands were returned to the MacMillans, in whose ownership they remained until 1831, when they were sold to the Cathcarts.

Also in Carsphairn churchyard is an old stone which only has the initials MM on the top, along with the verse:

YOU TRAVLERS AS YOV PASS BY

COME READ AND DO NOT FEAR

FOR DOVN BELOV THIS STON DOTH LY

TRVTH'S CHAMPION BVRIED HERE

Local tradition claims that this was the grave of a Covenanter, perhaps another MacMillan, who survived the persecutions.
