Covenanter Hotel
The Covenanter Hotel is probably named in honour of Rev Richard Cameron, who was born a few hundred yards further down the High Street. There are no known associations with the building and the Covenanters - the building was probably erected (or rebuilt) in 1771. The hotel sign includes the line - 'Down with tyranny - we are and we will make free.' This is taken from John Galt's novel on the Covenanters, Ringan Gilhaize, said when the Covenanters were making their way into Dumfries at the start of the Pentland Rising in 1666.
