In 1892 local research reckoned that there were 95 people in Hamilton who suffered for their Covenanting adherence.
Col John Burns was injured at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge and died soon after. He was buried in the district at Allanshaw. He is thought to have been a brother of an ancestor of Robert Burns, the poet.
